Trust Does Not Remove the Struggle

In your own time, please read Psalm 1 with me. The contrast of the flourishing way of the Lord versus the way of the wicked is briefly presented to us. Let us settle at the final verse, verse 6. He is holding out His hand to you — take it and follow after Him.

The Lord knows the way, and any other way will lead to waste: “for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” The main idea I see here is this — we should take delight in His way, His direction, and in who He is, and then follow His way.

I have walked over stones, in darkness, and asked the question, “is this the way that He wanted me to walk?” “Do I really trust Him?” Have you ever asked this? If you look at your life, today, what would you say to the question: “do I trust the Lord, do I trust that His way is worth following?”

I once hiked in a gorge, where we reached a point where we had to slide down a slippery shaft. We realised it was a one-way trip. We had no way of turning back, but we did it. I started a path when I was much younger. I had no way of turning back, but I walked it. However deep the waters got, I was committed. However high the cliffs around me got, I was committed. After years, there were times I asked the Lord if this was still the way — maybe I got lost, maybe I heard wrong? He always encouraged me, even though the pain remained. Trust does not remove the struggle; trust directs you, and invites you to fix your eyes on Him. So, even if you struggle, even if you complained, even if you relied on yourself at times — where do you rest? Do you trust Him?

Let us pray. Lord, I know that I have at times questioned You beyond reason. I have grumbled against You. I repented of that in sorrow. Please search me, Lord — if somewhere in my heart I still complain, if I still lack trust, please show me Your faithfulness. Were You not with Your servant David, did You not guide him? Did You not anoint him as king over Israel, even while another sat on the throne? Did he not become king and rule over Israel? Even though he slept in caves at times, he did not take matters into his own hands, but he trusted You, Lord. We can also trust in You. You know the way. You are wonderful and loving; we can trust You. When we look into Your eyes, we see the love that You have for us. We can trust You — that even when our feet get soaked and we feel the cold, this is the way. You are the Way. Be honoured and glorified — praise Your name. Amen.

Please, consider trusting our Lord with your whole heart. He asked us to love each other as He loved us. We can trust Him. It will not look perfect when we do it, but He will guide us on our way. Even if you stumble a bit, keep walking in His steps. So pick up your eyes, take His hand, and trust Him.
