I Remember, Lord, Please Help

Please take some time and read Psalm 4. When last did you face a situation that was daunting? When last did you have opposition that laughed at your pain? Nobody wanted to believe that you were suffering the onslaught of a foe. But the Lord knows.

David does not open by describing the size of his trouble. He opens by remembering — “you have given me relief when I was in distress” (Psalm 4:1). His plea today is built on what God has already proven, not on what he merely hopes might happen. This is where his confidence comes from.

Rather than gazing at the size or intensity of our problem — a liar, a deception, coming trouble — let us remember the times our God came to help us. Be it in Scripture, our own lives, or even the lives of our friends, remember His works. Give Him thankful praise. Then, from that thankfulness, ask Him for help, knowing He has already answered you before. Back to the problem you face right now — how might you honour God if you approached it the way David did? Would you enjoy a night of good rest, falling asleep with ease, as you settle into the safety of the Lord?

I have seen the Lord turn bad situations into testimonies and victory. A friend of mine was once falsely accused. His family was verbally assaulted, and it escalated as he stood his ground. False accusations were laid against him, and it even reached the point where attorneys were summoned. Before the meeting, he asked friends to intercede in prayer. As he entered, he carried the heart of Christ with him. He stood on his faith in Jesus Christ, calling on His name. His words rang with righteousness, and it melted the accusers’ hearts as they submitted to the name of the Lord. The tension broke in a moment, and he was able to witness to them. The accusers apologised for their lies.

Lord, I do not know every situation we face. I know You have helped us at times when we saw no good outcome — even when poison darts, dripped with guile, came from the mouths of friends. Now, at this very time, once again, standing on righteousness — help, please. Victory and relief are found only in Your wisdom. If my suffering causes my enemies to repent and turn toward righteousness, then my suffering has reflected Your heart. If they refuse, then come and relieve me of their venom. Save me, my Lord, so that I might praise Your name in joy. I want to go to sleep tonight in peace, knowing that You are the great warrior who extends grace to the humble, but will strike down the proud. All honour and glory to You, our Lord and our God. In the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords. Amen.

I know that some situations are heavy. I know it is easy to simply say, “ask the Lord for help.” But that point of humble trust gives Him the honour. It is frightening, but He is far stronger than any situation, and far wiser than the craftiness of our enemies. Ask the Lord that you may go and sleep in peace tonight, knowing that He is the Lord.
